small voice of the month – the Sunnyside Ocean Defenders (Nae Straw At Aw!)

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”

This month the smallVOICE team highlights a small group of primary school conservation activists as our ‘small voice of the month‘. Margaret went to meet the Ocean Defenders of Sunnyside Primary School in Glasgow, who have found their voice in a campaign to curtail the use of plastic straws – and plastic in general – because sooner or later it ends up in the ocean. ‘Nae straw at aw’ is their slogan and they’ve been fearlessly taking their message out and about, to cafes, to businesses such as carton manufacturers Tetrapak and ferry company Calmac and to other schools.

Margaret spoke to Beth, Megan, Luke and Charis – and they were great. You can hear their voices and more about the project at 33’40 minutes in to the March podcast.
