A Thousand Words: Norman Shanks

It was Norman Shanks’ choice in our Thousand Words interview for the January podcast.

Biography
The Rev Dr Norman Shanks has a wide range of experience in the
public and voluntary sector having worked as a civil servant in the
Scottish Office, serving as Private Secretary to the Secretary of State
for Scotland from 1975-77.

He then trained for the Church of Scotland ministry at New College,
Edinburgh University, and served as Chaplain to Edinburgh University
(1985-88). Norman has also been a Lecturer in Practical Theology at
Glasgow University (1988-95), Leader of the Iona Community (1995-2002) and
minister of Govan Old Parish Church, Glasgow (2003-2007).

He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Glasgow
University in 2005 for services to church and community. He has a
long-standing interest and involvement in social and community issues and
wide experience of decision-making and consultation processes gained
throughout voluntary appointments he has held, including Convener of the
Church of Scotland’s Church and Nation Committee; Chairman of Edinburgh
Council of Social Service; Member of the Scottish Constitutional
Convention, BBC Broadcasting Council for Scotland, UK Board of Christian
Aid, and World Council of Churches Central Committee.
