We’re beyond delighted to have live music and chat with our guest Margaret MacLarty, and our featured ‘small voice of the month’ is Emma Gonzalez and the other ‘small voices’ coming out of USA schools, speaking up against gun crime. Finally, our regular Moral Mixdown discussion looks at, er, Hell.

Thank you. You hell-ed my attention all the way through, as ever… and are no doubt grateful my repertoire of hellish puns is minimal, otherwise this reply would be utterly purgatorial. Like you, I loved the ‘Pilgrimage’ series which I watched back-to-back on Easter Monday.

Excellent choice of Small Voice of the month, and timely in a week when there has been much violence reported closer to home. Also, it felt to me that the announcement that the Birmingham Commonwealth Games will not include shooting seemed timely and maybe reflects a subtle shift in thinking about recreational gun ownership in these islands?

Wonderful music, and inspiring reflections on art… just what I needed to help me relax on a wet Saturday afternoon at the end of a very busy few weeks.

Just listened to hell part. Well, better late than never, & I do like to cheer myself up in the lunch hour :). Hmm…. it made me think… I like what Anne says about focussing our attention on suffering in this world… I suppose another initial thought though is, does the overall view of hell here do justice to… the New Testament (just a minor one there!) in the clarity & starkness of its vision of both heaven & hell (both symbolically represented, but real)… and also the nature of human choice, that can lead to lives of both great goodness & love, and also lives of great evil, destruction & hate. Hell to me communicates at the very least something very powerful and sense-making about human choice and the real gravity of its consequences. Perhaps a follow on, maybe even a book review, could be thoughts on CS Lewis’ The Great Divorce or Screwtape Letters. Or the nature of evil. Y’know, just the small stuff 🙂

Another small thought – if hell is conceived as a place God tortures poor souls who displease him or don’t believe the right stuff, it sounds barbaric; but if it’s considered as the ultimate consequence of rejecting a great love and living utterly for self, it at strikes me as still having meaning & resonance, a reality of human experience writ large (selfish living in this world can make you lonely & miserable after all).
But I also at least sympathised with Rob Bell’s suggestion in Love Wins that there must always be some way back…that heaven’s gates & God’s welcoming arms remain open after death…hmmm…!

  Hi Bruce, glad you got to this eventually. I think we’d agree that plenty of people experience hell on earth. Using the NT to back a notion of hell, though, won’t get much traction with me – depends on how people stand on the whole authority of scripture stuff.

    Thanks Darren… I guess my response question would be, if hell/Gehenna is woven into the NT including words of Jesus, how do we untangle it? Yes the authority of scripture issue is big here, and would love to hear more on it, I know it was touched on briefly before.
