smallVOICE podcast – November 2016

The days are getting shorter but our team is just as busy – we review the Man Booker shortlisted novel His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet; New Scottish Hymns Band, in the guise of Greg de Blieck and Ellyn Oliver, sing for us live in the studio; Stuart Murdoch tells us about his photo that is worth a thousand words; we reveal the small voice of the month; and finally our Moral Mixdown which this month looks at the issue of remembrance and respect, poppies and politics.

Thank you for another entertaining and thoughtful listen.

Later today I will be off to the annual “Service of Grieving and Gratitude”, a kind of All Souls service, which we share with local Church of Scotland parishes, so the thoughts from Stuart Murdoch and your reflections on the wearing of poppies (maybe all remembrance is de facto political, if by political we mean about power, or more specifically empowering… If we remember, we are empowered to reflect, learn and grow and to move forward… I am wondering whether for Christians that makes Communion a political act… (I suspect in some sense it does/is)). Definitely got my thoughts whirring 🙂

I first came across New Scottish Hymns as a CD in a small independent bookshop in Leicestershire at least a decade ago… so there you go!!

Hi Catriona, thanks for the comments. I love the idea that Communion is a political act – I guess in certain countries it definitely is or was (think of Oscar Romero for example).
