A warm welcome for a cold month! Join us for an hour of chat, music and debate on matters moral, ethical and spiritual. We have live music from our guests davesnewbike as well as our regular features A Thousand Words which is a conversation with Isabel Smyth and our small voice of the month which this month features Compassionate Inverclyde and the ‘No One Dies Alone’ programme; our intrepid team reviews the movie The Shack; and as usual we round things off with our Moral Mixdown which this month’s asks ‘Should what happens in the past stay in the past?’

Thank you, as always, for making me think about important topics. As is so often the case, you made me smile, you gently rattled my cage, you offered ideas and shared something of your own stories.

  Thanks for your comment Catriona. It is humbling and scary to think that smallvoice can inspire listeners to put their own thoughts on record, as you have done.
  
  My intention, as one of the presenters, is to express honest responses to the topics we cover, and the three presenter structure seems to lend itself well to provoking discussion, debate and disagreement, not deliberately engineered but a reflection of the different paths we walk, all vaguely in the same direction. We can agree sometimes, but often we don’t.
  
  If listeners grasp that, and keep coming back for more, we are fulfilling our purpose. And if they leave comments we are inspired to go through the process all over again.

Hi folks – for once, I can post here as a listener rather than a presenter! (Thanks to Holly for doing a worryingly good job by the way.)

Great podcast which I enjoyed whilst walking into work this morning. I enjoyed Holly’s honesty regarding The Shack in the Media Review and I did wonder if there might be a new podcast altogether which we could offer: old people watch movies and complain they can’t read or hear anything. To judge by the letters page of the Radio Times, there’s an audience out there already!

I very much enjoyed hearing the full band version of davesnewbike’s song “Tin Can and the Flood”, though I think it’s high time Tom fessed up and let us know just how he came to ever think of “a mango on heat” as a metaphor. And a big shout out to the technical team for doing such a grand job of capturing the band live – no mean feat.

I also really enjoyed A Thousand Words and was very taken with the notion that we should spend time with another faith so that we can come back with our own faith changed.

hi all, just heard the Shack review, enjoyed that! Thanks for presenting a balance of positive & negative between you, felt fair. Some women from my fellowship group in Bradford liked it, especially the Jesus walking on water part if that rings any bells? I’ve not seen, Rotten Tomatoes’ slating, and the trailer, put me off. But read the book years ago.
A bit that sticks in my mind is the suggestion of how God the Spirit may have drawn very close to the little girl in her hour of fear and dire straits – that’s actually inspired me to pray the same for people who may be say dying alone under rubble in an earthquake scenario etc. It was fresh and powerful.
But yes, it strikes me it’s likely very difficult to convey profound spiritual truth and indeed the Trinity in human actors in an American film, without lapsing into cheesiness of truly Stiltonesque proportions 🙂

yes, like the moral mixdown too, nuanced. A couple of ideas I wonder about for discussion… how as Christians we can respond to how our media & culture treat Christmas… and the ‘awe fix’ folk get from stunning nature shows like Blue Planet II (recalled the other day that the first series inspired my first set of radio spots with GRF back in 2001 or so…)
